The Belgrade Theatre was the first civic theatre to be built after the war and was opened in March 1958, acquiring its name in recognition and thanks for a gift of timber from the Yugoslav city of Belgrade that was used extensively in the construction of the main auditorium. Autumn 2007 saw the re-opening of the Belgrade Theatre after completion of its major capital project, including a new 250-300 seat second space, B2, and refurbishment of the existing English Heritage grade II listed building.

The Dark Side of Buffoon

Saturday 27 February until Saturday 20 March

A doleful dad, his simpleton son, a puppet brother and a missing mother. Two bumpkin fools, a vengeful Doge (half man/half bull), a bearded lady, mafia mobsters and elephant dung. Scissor-fearing twins (conjoined at the hair), Leonardo the lion-tamer and a genuine fall guy… all in a surreal 19th Century Italian travelling circus.

Welcome to The Dark Side of Buffoon, a deliciously disturbing but considerably comic world populated by a collection of the most curious characters, that is brimful of the barmy yet touching as a tearjerker and where glamour and danger meet in equal parts.

From the wildly imaginative minds of actors, writers and comedians, John and Martin Marquez, The Dark Side of Buffoon is a whirlwind of magically quick changes and mesmerising personality transformations.

With echoes of the TV comedy series The League of Gentlemen, the surreal charm of The Mighty Boosh and the imagination of the Tim Burton film, Big Fish, this innovative new comedy drama also incorporates moments of real emotion.

Quirky and dark but packed with laughter from beginning to end, The Dark Side of Buffoon is the most innovative and refreshing show you’ll see this year –book your ringside seats now.

This production is showing in B2, The Belgrade’s newly created studio space already celebrated for showing some of the most original and ground-breaking productions around.
